Instagram update bringsa long-awaited change to carousel posts
Source: Adam Mosseri (Head of Instagram)
Instagram carousel posts are one of the most effective content formats on the platform. Research shows they generate, on average, around 12% higher engagement compared to standard posts. Now, this format has received one of its most anticipated updates yet.
Instagram has finally introduced the ability to rearrange photos and videos within an already published carousel post. For anyone managing social media content daily, this is a meaningful change that directly impacts workflow efficiency and post optimization.
What does this Instagram update bring?
Until now, the options were limited: either delete the post and recreate it, losing all comments, reactions, and reach it had already gained, or accept the post as it was. This new feature eliminates that compromise.
Users can now adjust the order of content within a carousel without deleting the post. The changes are reflected instantly, while all previously accumulated engagement remains intact.
Instagram emphasized that the goal of this feature is to give users more creative flexibility, allowing their posts to better reflect their intended vision.
How to change the order of photos in a carousel post?
If the feature is available on your profile, the process is as follows:
- Open the carousel post you want to edit.
- Tap the three-dot icon (⋯) in the top right corner of the post.
- Select the “Edit” option.
- Press and hold the photo or video you want to move.
- Drag it to your desired position within the carousel.
- Tap “Done” to confirm the changes.

The post will immediately display the updated order without losing any existing engagement. It is important to note that this feature is being rolled out gradually. If you do not see the option yet, it will likely become available on your profile soon.
What can and cannot be changed?
Available:
- Reordering all photos and videos within a post
- Changing the cover (first) image
- Applying changes to both old and new posts
- Reordering multiple times without limitations
Not available:
- Adding new photos or videos to an existing carousel
- Increasing the total number of slides after publishing
The first image in a carousel plays a crucial role. It determines whether a user will stop, open the post, and continue browsing the rest of the content. The ability to optimize that first impression after publishing is a significant advantage, especially for brands and commercial profiles.
Feature limitations
Despite its usefulness, it is important to have realistic expectations. Instagram still does not allow adding new photos or videos to an already published carousel. If additional visual content is needed, a new post is required.
This means that careful content planning remains essential for effective Instagram management. While the new feature expands optimization possibilities, it does not replace the need for strong pre-publishing preparation.
The ability to rearrange carousel posts may seem like a small technical update, but in everyday content management, it means fewer compromises, greater control, and ultimately, better results.
